What on earth is “toilet worked with yellow silk”? I really hope it’s not what I think it is! o_O

A “toilet” was nothing whatsoever with a water closet! It has become a euphemism but in the 18th Century would have been used to describe anything linked to “doing one’s toilet” ie make up etc. Using a toilet (pronounced ‘twaylet’) meant preparing yourself for presentation to the public. For a woman it meant attending to her toilet i.e. by adjusting her head-dress or wig, applying powder and rouge etc. It might involve a mirror and also a case holding combs and brushes, etc. The toilet described by Richard in the advert would have been a case capable of being carried. Embroidered with yellow silk motifs it would have been a very feminine and pretty household item.
